Academic

The Academic portion of our program at the Okanagan Hockey Academy is regarded as our most important component. The Okanagan Hockey Academy educational program is located at Penticton High, in a unique private-public arrangement. The public-private arrangement is designed to prepare our students for university entrance, while developing each student's self-confidence and self-discipline. Penticton High is one of the highest ranked academic schools in British Columbia each year.

The original Penticton high Shatford building was constructed in 1921, followed by the Ellis building in 1931. A new school was completed and opened it's doors in September 2008. The new structure is the most modern school in the province at a price tag of 55 million dollars. The two original buildings were also renovated and kept in place as part of the heritage of Penticton High. Dave Nackoney is the Academy's academic advisor and counsellor. Nackoney is responsible for supervising class selection, any educational needs and communications between parents, players, teachers and Academy staff. He works with each individual player to best allow him to reach his academic goals.

The private-public arrangement has the OHA players participate in public classes at the school, in conjunction with their own Academy classes. These classes consist of only Academy players and are supervised by our OHA academic teachers. The players receive full school credits for the Academy classes. The classes are designed to enhance the Academy student’s core classes by extra time and assistance.

The option for any Okanagan Hockey Academy student to participate in the Standard Aptitude Test enhances our academic program. The SAT exam is mandatory for any player or student wanting to attend a US University of Collage. It is not like most tests as with the SAT there are several sections and terminologies not often used. The Okanagan Hockey Academy researches NCAA programs annually to confirm SAT entrance and core course requirements.
